Sapogel Q oil cleanser

Sapogel Q oil cleanser

This is a rich, creamy, gel-like oil cleansing formula made with Sapogel Q. For this I have used the bones of my (personal favourite) passionfruit oil cleanser oil formula, (which you can find the formula for below) but we took out the polysorbate 80, which is in there for to make the formula easier to wash off, because 1. it turns out polysorbate 80 and Sapogel Q do not play well together (yes I found this out the hard way, no matter what I did it kept splitting) and 2. you actually don't need it! Sapogel Q has it's own natural wash-off abilities!

Usage rate for Sapogel Q ranges from 15% - 25%. Contrary to what you would think, less Sapogel Q results in a firmer gel and more creates a runnier gel.

For this formula I have used 25% Sapogel Q, which usually creates a thick honey-like texture, however I found that with the inclusion of castor oil, which is by nature very thick, 25% creates a very firm gel, the texture you would generally expect from a 15% Sapogel Q blend. So I wouldn't recommend lowering the Sapogel Q percentage for this particular formula or you might end up with a very solid gel!

About oil cleansing
Oil cleansing works on the basis of "like dissolves like" which means oil can get in and dissolve make up (including waterproof eye make up), sunscreen and general dirt and impurities that build up over the course of the day. It does all this gently without requiring harsh scrubbing or the use of surfactants which can strip the skin of its natural oils, which can throw off the skin's natural balance.

Ingredients
Makes 100g - use our Batch Size Calculator and the percentages provided here to easily adjust the volume of your batch.

Phase A
64% | 64g passionfruit seed oil
10% | 10g castor oil, certified organic
1% | 1g vitamin E

Phase B
25% | 25g Sapogel Q

Method

  • Weigh your Phase A ingredients into a beaker and stir (glass stirring rods are great for this).
  • Weigh out the Phase B (Sapogel Q) into a separate beaker, make sure it is large enough to fit your full formula.
  • Slowly add the Phase A in the Sapogel Q whilst whisking. See our video on how to do this below.
  • Once everything is combined pack in a pot and you're done!

See our video on how to work with Sapogel Q using an electric whisk.

To use

  • Apply to face and gentle cleanse in a circular motion.
  • Because of Sapogel Q's natural wash-off abilities, this will rinse off quite easily with warm water.
  • If you wish to double cleanse (see our blog below) then follow up with a water based cleanser.

Substitutions

  • The oils portion of this can be replaced with most other carrier oil/s. Note that different carrier oils will create a different consistency of the final product. For example, the castor oil in this makes it very thick, even at 25% Sapogel Q. At that percentage most other carrier oils would create a liquid honey-like texture.
  • Essential oils can be added though as you're mostly likely going to use this to remove stubborn eye makeup it is not recommended.
