Isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) dissolves a wide range of non-polar compounds. It also evaporates quickly, leaving nearly zero traces of oil, compared to ethanol, and is relatively non-toxic, compared to alternative solvents. Thus, it is used widely as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oils.
When making both cold process and melt and pour soap, 99% isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle is extremely useful.
For cold process soap, spraying isopropyl alcohol immediately after pouring can help reduce soda ash.
For melt and pour soap, spraying isopropyl alcohol immediately after pouring can help break up air bubbles and create a smooth surface. It can also help layers in soap adhere to each other. It can also be used to disperse oxides, micas and clays to be used in melt and pour soapmaking.
It is also helpful to sanitise surfaces before you get started then again for clean up post project.
