The castor plant, scientifically know as Ricinus communi, is a flowering plant native to the Mediterranean region, Eastern Africa and India. It is a large, fast-growing perennial shrub that belongs the the Euphorbiaceae family.

Castor oil is made through a process of extracting the oil from the seeds of the castor plant using the cold pressing method, where the seeds are physically pressed to squeeze out the oil. This is the preferred method for producing high-quality, pure, unrefined castor oil.

Castor oil is a very thick and sticky oil which takes a long time to absorb into the skin and can act as a barrier and protective medium against harsh conditions.

It is a rich emollient oil that can help to deeply moisturise, making it particularly beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin as it can help to lock in moisture, keeping skin soft and supple.

The moisturising properties of castor oil can potentially reduce the appearance of fine lines and help to improve the skin's elasticity and texture. It can also be used to moisturise and condition dry lips, leaving them soft and smooth.

Regular use of castor oil may help to even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Castor oil can be used as a natural cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and impurities from the skin. It's especially effective at breaking down and removing waterproof makeup.

Castor oil is a staple carrier oil for DIY skincare and haircare, giving rich texture to both anhydrous (oil only) and emulsified (oil and water) formulas.
