Pack includes:
Makes approximately 300g of each solid shampoo & conditioner bar
- All the ingredients you need, divided into easy to use steps
- Instructions are below
Note: No mould & no physical instructions sheets in this starter / refill pack
What you'll need:
Shampoo: Mould, pot, spatula, dust mask, knife, a stick blender is extremely useful.
Conditioner: Mould, pot, spatula and equipment to make a double boiler (large pot and smaller pot or heatproof jug).
Purchase: Mould or Colours you require. (Not included in the kit)
Instructions:
Solid shampoo method:
1. In a pot melt Step 1 and Step 2 together. Wear a face mask for this, keep any windows you can open, put on an extractor fan if you have one and don't have children around, the fumes from the SCI can be a bit harsh. The SCI can take a while to melt but don't leave it as you run the risk of it burning. Towards the end blending it with the stick blender can help speed up the process. Stir until the mixture comes together to form a paste-like consistency.
2. Take the pot off the heat and stir/whisk in Step 3. A stick blender will make the final bars smoother.
3. Using a spatula, pour the mixture into moulds. Smooth top over with a knife. It can be very difficult to get a clean finish so don’t worry if it’s a bit messy. It sets quickly so you can always pop it back on the heat to re-melt in between filling cavities.
Pop them in the fridge to set.
To Use:
wet your hair and stroke the shampoo bar along the hair to lather. Alternatively, rub the bar between your hands to create a lather. Massage into hair and scalp as you would with a liquid shampoo. Rinse out and then follow with your usual conditioner (try our recipe for solid conditioner bars!).
Leave the bar out to air dry, ready for its next use.
Solid conditioner method:
To make the double boiler, place heatproof jug carefully inside pan of water and simmer.
1. Melt Step 1 in the double boiler.
2. Take the jug off the heat once Step 1 is melted (but not boiling) and stir in Step 2.
Pour the mixture into moulds.
Place in fridge to set for 2-3 hours (you can speed up the process by placing in the freezer). Once hard, remove from moulds. Your conditioner bar is now ready to use.
To use, apply the bar to wet hair after shampooing and massage through. Rinse clean. Leave the bar out to air dry, ready for its next use.
About the ingredients.
We know some of these ingredients are unfamiliar and unpronounceable so here's a quick summary of what they are and what they do.
SCI (sodium cocoyl isethionate) - a coconut oil-based surfactant. It is very mild on skin, hair and eyes and has a silky skin feel. SCI makes a great lather and is good for making liquid shampoos and solid shampoo bars.
Cetearyl alcohol - a cosmetic wax used as a co-emulsifier and thickener in conditioners and some creams. Made from sustainably sourced RSPO mass balance certified palm oil
Conditioner pellets -Often seen in recipes as BTMS-25, these pellets make a luxurious hair conditioner (the best we've ever come across) and hair detangler for leave-on and rinse-off products.
Decyl glucoside – one of the first of the alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactants. APG surfactants are obtained from renewable, plant-derived raw materials, such as vegetable oils and starch. They have first-rate environmental and skin compatibility profiles and fit in well with consumer demands for wellness, 'green solutions', mildness to human skin, and safety for human health.
Lactic acid - Our lactic acid is produced from fermented corn. It is used to make a harder and longer-lasting bar and has excellent exfoliant, moisturising and deep cleansing properties.
Hydrolysed quinoaconsidered a complete protein, it is packed with vitamins and minerals as well as 17 amino acids which help repair damage to the hair shaft while its proteins coat and strengthen the hair. It can help to gently cleanse and nourish your hair while aiding in hair colour retention, conditioning and protection. It is also said to aid in hair growth while preventing breakage, increasing shine and the overall healthy appearance of the hair.
Coco caprylate – a skin-conditioning agent naturally derived from coconut oil to provide hydration, spreadability and slip.
Microcare DB -Ecocert approved preservative.
Organic glycerin - palm oil free, vegetable oil based, mainly soybean and coconut oil. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol which acts as a moisturiser (emollient) and humectant, meaning it absorbs water from the air.
